What I'm Watching, Reading, Listening to, and Rediscovering
Getting closer to Thanksgiving, so here’s what’s up for me…
Watching: News Archives from November 22, 1963
It’s striking to watch coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, 62 years ago today, and see how otherworldly television news appears (at least in comparison to what we have today).
First, CBS, in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Raw, emotional, waiting for confirmation of the inevitable, Walter Cronkite remains as steady as he can be in light of a world-changing event.
Next, NBC — the attached is a 6 hour video — failed to start recording its coverage for the first eleven minutes after breaking into normal programming. (Edwin Newman explains at the top what happened, and that they’re showing this, from an A&E Network special, as it would have aired.) The first half hour is how and when NBC learned what was going on.
At the 37-minute mark, NBC starts to receive bulletins and goes back and forth between New York and its affiliate in Dallas.
A stunningly sad day in American history.
Listening To: The Band Tennis Says Farewell
Indie-pop group Tennis released its final album, Face Down in the Garden, in April and, as they head off into the sunset, here’s something from the album and a couple old tracks I really dig.
Here’s “Sister” from their final album:
Here’s “Origins” from the album Young & Old 2012:
And, the song that served as my introduction to the band, “Need Your Love,” off of 2019’s Swimmer:
Reading: The Go-Giver, by Bob Burg and John David Mann
I first found this book ages ago and have made it an annual tradition to re-read it. The Go-Giver, by Bob Burg and John David Mann, is a parable of sorts and won’t take you very long to read at all. But the message will hopefully stick with you: You get out much more than you put into the world.
Trust me.
Rediscovering: Every Guest Star on The Love Boat. Ever.
Yes, that’s right, invest 40 minutes and see all of the guest stars that ever appeared on The Love Boat. Say no more.
Have a great Thanksgiving!

I'll never forget the JFK assassination. My dad had a heart attack the day before and we tried to keep the TV off ... those days did not have high-intensity medical care.
